ELTON JOHN: Soul Train's First White Singer

This week's news that the legendary TV show Soul Train could be headed to Broadway comes just weeks after Elton John celebrated the 40th anniversary of his Goodbye Yellow Brick Road. The album's first single, "Bennie and the Jets," was a hit with black listeners, and led Elton to become the show's first white performer.
He went on Soul Train May 17th, 1975 and sang "Bennie and the Jets" and "Philadelphia Freedom."
Speaking to us recently, Elton says "Bennie and the Jets'" success "opened up so many doors for me on black radio...I won the affection of the black community in music in America...That was the record that really broke the album."
Elton will release his Million Dollar Piano film, a document of his Las Vegas residency, on DVD and Blu-ray on June 30th.
